Sleep Your Way to a More Youthful Appearance

A few years ago I sat in a dermatologist’s office for some weird brown spots on my shoulder (don’t laugh, we know what those are). She looked at my face and said: “Hmmm…I wish I could get you to stop sleeping on your right side.” I didn’t think my sleep tendency was all that obvious, but apparently to a trained eye it is.

Newsflash!  Your preferred sleeping position has a real effect through time on your facial structure. Maybe this is obvious to some, but it never was to me. For verification I did some research, and there’s lots out there to affirm that as fact. Here’s a little excerpt from Web MD:

How Sleeping Positions May Cause Wrinkles

The way you sleep may actually cause wrinkles. No matter how soft your pillow, it puts pressure on your face each night. Over years, this can etch lines into your chin, cheeks, or forehead. Your personal pattern of sleep lines depends on how you tend to rest your face on the pillow.

· What you can do: Sleep on your back. People who don't sleep with their face on a pillow do not tend to develop sleep lines.

Alrighty then, here we have some very cheap advice that is fairly well supported in the literature, and apparently, at least to one doctor, on my very own face.

But I ask: is it even possible to change your sleep position?

No matter how hard I try, I end up on my side or stomach. Last night I laid a bunch of traps around me, including my husband and the cat, to keep from rolling over to my side. Alas, some subconscious yearnings turned me in a direction I could not ultimately resist. I awakened with an uncomfortable pressure on my shoulder. My first thought was, where is the ceiling? Followed by - I am facing the wrong direction…and I am also having a heart attack or something, what is that pressure on my shoulder?

Slowly I turned to find the cat, his eyes bearing the message he had not the words to say: “FAIL. And by the way, you have a wrinkle on your cheek.”
