Pluck Your Duck

03/16/2012 08:54

This time the road from Chico to Ukiah has been a long, rainy one. I took the scenic route this time, and paid special attention to the signs to keep myself amused. I only got a picture of one of them—the weather had made the roads a bit more treacherous than usual, and I didn’t want to risk my life for my hobby.

But anyway, especially for the metropolitan folks who read this, here’s a sampling of the signs along a three-hour drive by way of back-country roads.

I’ll highlight today’s theme, PLUCK YOUR DUCK, because plucking services abound in these parts. In Northern California, chickens and their fowl friends roam freely (chicks gone wild) and even cross the road from time to time. Why? Based on my limited research, it seems they are trying to get to the other side.

Other local signs along the way:

DUCKS PLUCKED HERE

PIG HUNT!

BISON STORE NOW OPEN

GOT BATS?

ANIMAL HAVEN

STUFF YOUR ANIMAL HERE TAXIDERMY

THE BAT HOUSE

Here is one sign I did not see here…it comes from my home state. Of course, fellow Illinoisans will immediately recognize this famous recreational area. It’s one of those ha-ha real things you pass along the corn-flanked highway to Central Illinois. By grace, the fellow for whom this park was named was not born here in the Emerald Triangle.
