I Ate It, I Rate It
03/20/2012 08:35Pizza with the “savory flavors of a backyard barbecue”?
Hmmm. On Feb 28 of this year Papa Murphy’s, a take-and-bake pizza chain we LOVE here in Northern California, introduced this doozy and backed it with heavy advertising. Every time the commercial comes on at home, Marc and I have looked at each other and said “blech.”
I figured a pie with dill chip pickles and hamburger on it is a pizza with a major identity crisis. Its base is a regular pizza crust, but it’s topped with something called Burger Sauce--a mixture of mustard and ketchup. From there, it’s layered with ground beef, bacon, mozzarella, onions, and tomatoes, and then it’s topped with- ( >< ewe! ) - a layer of the dill pickles and some cheddar cheese.
With a hundred percent Chicago blood flowing through my veins, I could not accept this pizza philosophically as real. Only in California would such an abomination be attempted.
But yesterday my staff, who are each considerably younger than I am, and California natives to boot, ordered it for a meeting. I ate a piece, then another.
By afternoon, I was even craving it again.
I give it 3.5 stars out of five. Anyone in the 8-13 age range would rate this even higher. If this is available where you live, don’t be afraid….try it. But if you don’t have a Papa Murphy’s in your state, I would NOT try this one at home.
