In Forget the Land of Lincoln: More Like the Land of Suckers, Kass speculates on the origin of one of the first of Illinois' "official" (snicker) nicknames.

He's right on the money about Illinois, to coin a pun (or two). Here's a photo of the old map with nicknames included. They are hard to read, which led me to an online seach for alternate nicknames of all the states. I could not find those on this map, but found others, below, that fit the bill. By the way, I did not find my favorite: Wisconsin - Smell Our Dairy Air.
